Perhaps Koosh is trying to cash in on the popularity of nerf guns, and I say, the more the merrier! Competition is good!
But this effort falls a bit flat.
On the plus side, my son is able to easily manipulate the big red handle.
On the negative side, the ball starts a downward trajectory as soon as it leaves the muzzle of the gun. If you want to hit a picture that is 12 feet away you have to aim higher than the picture. You can forget the little targeting reticle it has, its just "for looks".
As soon as you pull back, you need to release the handle to let the ball fly. Which doesn't encourage careful aiming. I guess thats not that big a deal. I would like to have seen the handle lock in the cocked position so you could shoot it at your leisure. But since this isn't possible you have to work it like a regular bow and arrow (duh) which means pull back and shoot in one action. I don't really feel like this is a bow and arrow because it shoots a ball, and has a firing mechanism.
if you want your kid to get a cool "nerf" bow and arrow experience, my 8 yo daughter has one of these: Air Hunterz Z-Curve Bow. She enjoys it very much. I think that this is a newer version of the same thing: Zing Air Z-Curve Bow My son is only 4 (almost 5) and he prefers to use the Zing bow instead of this Koosh one. I'm thinking of returning this koosh.
Anyway I think its a good effort by Koosh, but not a good purchase for you. My son likes it, its ok (its ok = 3 stars) but it really stinks for any sort of target practice. its really only good for chasing each other around the house and shooting each other at a very close range. This is fun, but, its also very limiting compared to what you can do with a better toy.
